The maiden edition of the Basic Education School Sports (BESS) kicked off in Abuja on the 8th of November,2024. The competition is specifically for athletes under the age of 13, and serves as a forum to cultivate and showcase the sporting potential of our young ones in the basic education sub-sector. The games are a platform not only for competition but for fostering teamwork, discipline, and character—values that are integral to the development of our future leaders. Participants will be competing in Athletics, Football, Table Tennis, Ayo Scrabble, Badminton, Volleyball and Handball.
The competition was declared open by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), UBEC Prof. Bala Zakari, also in attendance at the opening ceremony was the Permanent Secretary, FCT Okeke Joy Chinwe, FCT, UBEB Chairman, Dr. Alhassan Sule, and other Management Staff of the Board as well as Director, Academic Services, UBEC, Mrs. Roseline Medubi and the President National School Sport Federation (NSSF), Mrs. Olabisi Joseph and other officials. The competition is hosted by the FCT, UBEB, organized by the NSSF and supported by the Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC). The competition drew athletes from 25 States and the FCT. The games will last from the 8th-16th of November, 2024.
